U.S. Department of Justice - Drug Courts: The Second Decade
The National Institute of Justice’s study finds that while drug courts can reduce recidivism, research is still needed on which offenders benefit most from being placed in the drug court system. Also included is a cost evaluation of drug court participation: “One definitive cost-benefit evaluation estimated the average investment per program participant was $5,928; the savings were $2,329 in avoided criminal justice system costs and $1,301 in avoided victimization costs over a 30-month period."
American Enterprise Institute - For Addicts, Firm Hand Can Be the Best Medicine
Dr. Sally Satel cites evidence of drug court success in preventing recidivism and stresses the importance of serious punishment for repeat offenders: “A myth is that the addict must be motivated to quite—that, as it is often put, ‘You have to do it yourself.’ Not so. Volumes of data attest to the power of coercion in shaping behavior. With a threat hanging over their heads, patients often test clean."
